ABOUT US

STORIE

Oscar, a native of Uruguay, came to South Africa as a young boy. He quickly fell in love with the vibrancy and eclectic mix of South African culture, particularly its passion for great meat. Over time, however, he began to feel a little homesick—especially for his mother’s homemade recipes and her warm cooking spirit.

Determined to bring a taste of home to Johannesburg, Oscar began recreating traditional recipes. After a while, he met Bernardo, a flamboyant Argentine who had recently arrived in South Africa. Missing the chance to speak his native language, Bernardo went to the Argentine Embassy, where Oscar was working. The two quickly became close friends and, through grit, sweat, and determination, decided to start selling empanadas at the now-famous Arts on Main market in Maboneng.

Twelve years ago, Oscar and Bernardo were selling hundreds of empanadas every weekend. They had discovered a terrific gap in the market and, as demand grew, expanded their offerings to include pork and sirloin sandwiches grilled over open fire—now legendary in Joburg’s CBD.

After running their market business for quite some time, the next logical step was to scale up into a restaurant—something unique, authentic, and a little offbeat. The answer lay in the vibrant and creatively cool Maboneng Precinct. And so, CHE Argentine Grill was born: a true taste of Argentina in the heart of Johannesburg, with open-fire grills to delight your taste buds and warm company to welcome you in.

Enjoy!
